16 Things That Being Bipolar Has Taught Me

One thing that I am learning as a Black, bisexual, twenty-something with Bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety in 2019 – is that bipolar will teach you things that you have either never known about yourself or have always overlooked.

I am – my own best project.

I have things about me that aren’t great and continue to cost me dearly. I choose not to blame my disorder, but bipolar disorder definitely plays a role in many of my shortcomings. Lately, I have started to wonder if I will ever reach my full potential. I am not doing everything that I should be in life right now. I feel very behind. I feel like a fraud sometimes; I am not who I so desperately try my hardest to be out in the world.

How can I grow? How can I sustain my wellness? How can I be great despite living with a mental illness? Will I ever have it 100% under control???

Here are 16 quick things that I have learned while battling bipolar disorder and coming of age, maybe you can relate. I hope that my little list helps you just as much as I hope it helps me ❤ :

  1. Negative self-talk can and WILL bring about bipolar episodes, so DO NOT do it.
  2. Self-Care is a daily, ONGOING responsibility, not a privilege or a treat only done on birthdays, holidays and weekends. TAKE CARE OF YOU AND PAY THE COST TO DO SO – IT’S WORTH YOUR LIFE
  3. Meditation can be done in the car, in the line at the grocery store, sitting at your work desk and before you even get out of bed to start your day
  4. You don’t have to post your negative thoughts during a bad episode on social media
  5. You don’t have to share your struggles with people you are not sure that you can trust; TRUST YOUR INNER GUT AND INTUITION even if that means dealing with your pain alone. Yes, alone ❤ Find your strength!
  6. Shower and brush your teeth daily, and do your hair. Neglecting yourself will only add to your depression. Break the cycle no matter how weak or hopeless you feel in the moment. Do this and you will smile inside ❤
  7. Remember to eat well and/or take your vitamins. It’s okay if you don’t always do both, you don’t have to be perfect. But take care of your body the best that you can and you’ll love yourself for it
  8. Also Remember: facials work WONDERS. I prefer charcoal, mint or green tea masks/scrub. You can buy them for cheap at Walgreen’s (buy the store brand) Facials help to relax you and remind you that you ARE BEAUTIFUL during your lowest times. Men, you can try them too 🙂
  9. Pick Up a Book: I’m an author and I admit that I do not read as much as I should, but it’s my goal to improve upon. Pick up something you can really dive into, a book that will help you to think deeply and critically, and your mind will be stimulated which helps to improve your wellness overall 🙂
  10. GO OUTSIDE, SOAK UP THE SUNSHINE: If you work a lot, I understand if this can be challenging, but, try. Stand or walk outside for at least five minutes and trust me when I say that it makes all the difference. If the weather is nice, take advantage of it and your body, mind and soul will thank you for it.
  11. Think about what you are going to say before you speak during an episode: BE MINDFUL, because not all people will be understanding of your bipolar disorder and that’s just the way it is
  12. DO NOT MISS your therapy and doctor appointments. Your health comes first ❤
  13. It’s okay to go MIA for a while if need be, but make sure to text your loved ones and let them know you need some time and space for a while, so as to not worry people who care about you.
  14. Go to the art museums and get lost ; it is super therapeutic, mentally stimulating and emotionally calming
  15. It’s okay to take breaks from social media, for however long it takes
  16. It’s totally fine to be yourself – do not feel the need to make yourself uncomfortable in order to accommodate others. As I said before, your health is your own TOP PRIORITY and if folks can’t understand that shit, then they have no place in your life.
